As far as interrelated water and energy challenges go, the case of the natural gas drilling method known as fracking is a doozy. Natural gas has been touted as a relatively cheap, less-polluting replacement for coal and petroleum, and that’s fine as far as global warming management goes.

Hydraulic fracturing contaminating the drinking water across Texas is a concern to the Lubbock community. The city of Lubbock held its monthly Board of Health meeting Friday afternoon at the Civic Center to discuss the updates on hydraulic fracturing. Board member and activist LeAnn Lamb-Vines said studies have shown that methane has been found in […]
PITTSBURGH — More than 100 protests against the natural gas drilling process known as fracking are scheduled to take place around the world today, building on public concerns but also using a highly simplified message to spur outrage. The GlobalFrackdown website and campaign were developed by Food & Water Watch, a Washington, D.C., nonprofit group […]
Business and environmental activists are in a stand-off over the government lifting the ban on fracking, with one side declaring they will fight the decision all the way to the Constitutional Court, and the other predicting huge benefits, including job creation and cheaper energy.
Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, for shale gas in the Karoo basin is receiving full Cabinet attention, although no declaration on whether a moratorium on fracking would be lifted could be made at this stage, Cabinet spokesperson Jimmy Manyi said on Wednesday.
Johannesburg – South Africa’s winning the rights to host the bulk of the world’s biggest radio telescope looks set to clash with plans to use the high-pressure pumping method fracking, which can cause earth tremors, to extract gas from its vast shale deposits. Last week, South Africa won the rights to locate about 70 percent […]
I don’t like to exaggerate the impacts of the many environmental issues we face. But it’s impossible to overstate how dangerous fracking is. Fracking stands for “hydraulic fracturing,” a highly polluting process for tapping underground pools of natural gas. It involves drilling a hole a mile deep, thousands of feet long, then pumping down millions […]
In a major setback for the oil and gas industry, the French Senate last week voted 176 to 151 to ban hydraulic fracturing (a.k.a. fracking), the controversial gas industry drilling method facing scrutiny the world over due to water contamination and other concerns. Once the legislation receives presidential approval, France will be the first country […]
Dumping all our household waste on landfill is bad for the environment. A Spanish company teamed up with European Scientists and engineers to find the best way to ensure more of our organic rubbish is turned into biogas and compost. Hundreds of years ago, humans discovered flammable gas could be produced from rotting organic matter […]
