Loughborough University wins ‘Reinvent the Toilet’ award from Gates Foundation

VIDEO: Loughborough University has won a prestigious prize in an international competition organised by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to create a reinvented toilet that is clean, safe, durable and affordable for the poor and does not need to be connected to electricity or a sewer.

This reinvented toilet should be appropriate for wealthy as well as developing countries, where 2.5 billion people worldwide do not have access to safe and affordable sanitation.

Three prototype technologies were recognised for most closely matching the criteria for the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge. Loughborough, the only British university in the competition, was awarded second prize, with California Institute of Technology and The University of Toronto respectively receiving first and third prize.

Waterless toilets or toilets that can recover water without mains electricity supply will probably become commonplace in the next few years.  This type of technology is a necessity if we are to live sustainably and reduce pressure on our water resources.  Another low-tech solution is to use rainwater to flush toilets although in the future, water-flushing toilets may be seen as excessively wasteful of potential drinking water.  Greywater recycling and rainwater harvesting are systems that can be implemented on a wide range of scales -from small households to mega-factory buildings.  Click on the links below to see the various JoJo tanks suitable for rainwater storage and other uses.
