Australia: Perth water crisis sparks plea for help

The Western Australian Greens have called on the State Government to reintroduce water efficiency plans in Perth to resolve a water crisis in the state’s south-west.

The Greens say the Government has to reintroduce the Waterwise program and stormwater recycling.

Greens’ water spokeswoman Alison Xamon says communities and growers in the region are facing drought and emergency water-carting due to Perth’s water usage.

“I think at the very least we need to make sure that, particularly people who are living in the metropolitan areas are going to have to, as a matter of urgency, look at our water usage and do what we can to actually drive that down,” she said.

“So clearly that is starting to have a detrimental impact towards our entire south-west water system.

“So what we know is that we’ve currently got a water crisis occurring in the south-west.

“This is largely due to the early effects of climate change in terms of decreased rainfall, so it’s going to make it all the more critical that we’re careful about what’s happening with the usage of our water going into the future.”
