South Africa’s water strategy: Have your say
November 9, 201210 ways to celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali this year
November 10, 2012Whether it’s bread, meat, milk or fruit, whatever we eat demands water.
The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimates that we need to increase agricultural production globally by 70% to feed the projected 9 billion people expected on the planet by 2050.
But given the current global food crisis, boosting agricultural production will certainly increase water stress.
Rainwater harvesting is seen as “non-technological”, unpredictable and vulnerable to climate hazards. Yet, agriculture depends on rainfall: on average it accounts for 85% of agricultural water usage. So harvesting and conserving rainwater is key to boosting crop yields.
Good water management in agriculture should therefore not only be about investing in hi-tech drip or pumping systems; it should also consider efficient rainwater harvesting, management, conservation, storage and resourceful use to reduce water stress and increase agricultural production.

Rainwater harvesting in urban areas not only saves homeowners and businesses money on their water bills, it has other environmental benefits, apart from the obvious water conservation benefits. Rain water harvesting and diverting the rain water to water tanks reduces runoff over pavements, yards and roads; this stormwater usually ends up in local waterways and can carry a wide range of pollutants from oil, herbicides and other chemicals, thus being a major source of pollution to streams and rivers. The effect of large amounts of stormwater in short periods of time results in stream bank erosion and heavy silt deposits.
Rainwater stored in water tanks or rainwater tanks is also becoming a necessity in some parts of South Africa where local municipalities are failing to supply adequate, clean supplies of water to residents. Choose a rainwater tank or water tank carefully; JoJo Tanks manufacture high quality water tanks that have a food-grade lining approved by the FDA.
