Water flows through heart of sustainability challenges
July 4, 2012Tshwane / Pretoria residents will pay more for electricity & water
July 5, 2012Rainwater collection is one of the oldest means of collecting water for domestic purposes. Archeological evidence attests to the capture of rainwater as far back as 4,000 years ago, and the concept of rainwater harvesting in China may date back 6,000 years.
Unfortunately, as societies became more technologically advanced, the simple practice of rainwater harvesting largely disappeared in favour of technology, engineering and the construction of huge dams and centralised water conservation schemes.
But the environmental landscape changed and a renewed interest in rainwater harvesting developed over the last 20 years or so mostly driven by environmental concerns and an interest in reducing the increasing pressure on water consumption due to the population explosion worldwide.
In South Africa specifically, it seems that we are on brink of water shortage. In fact, if urgent steps are not taken, South Africa will run out of water for future economic growth within the next five years.
This is one of the alarming views expressed by World Wildlife Fund SA’s chief executive Morne du Plessis who warns that water availability is one of the decisive factors that will affect the country’s economic development,
“At current consumption rates, our demand will outstrip supply by 2015.”
The latest water tanks offer many fashionable colour options to complement home colour schemes and the smaller sized tanks such as the 750Lt JoJo Slimline, can easily be placed under decks, alongside walkways, around corners or vertically against a wall. They are perfect solutions for the lack of space in urban settings making them very appealing to earth-conscience homeowners.
In addition to above ground options, JoJo Tanks also offers underground tanks to consider when space and accessibility are issues. The 6000Lt JoJo underground tank has become an increasingly popular option for architects and building designers who utilise this underground water storage system to allow for maximum use of property, allowing for more green space. Professionally installed, underground water tanks can be placed under paved light weight traffic areas, driveways, garden beds or lawns providing an eco-friendly and aesthetically pleasing solution for rainwater capture and rainwater harvesting.
A rainwater harvesting system using a selection of JoJo water tanks is highly drought tolerant. Because the water tanks collect rain so efficiently, even a light rain can make a big contribution to your water storage capacity!
