Utilizing rain barrels in your landscape would seem to be a no-brainer. As Florida’s population grows, the demand on limited water resources steadily increases. Saltwater intrusion into freshweater wells further reduces the state’s available water supply.
Homeowners who want to continue watering landscape plants must practice water conservation.
One of the best ways to conserve water is through the use of rain barrels or rain water tanks to catch stormwater runoff. If you have gutters on your house, you may be able to collect 55 gallons of water during a half an inch rainfall by connecting a downspout to a rain barrel.
In the classes at the Agriculture Center, held several times during the year, participants make rain barrels out of 50 to 55 gallon food-grade drums that were used to carry food products such as juices, olives, pickles etc. Master Gardeners are always on hand to help with drilling holes for spigots and other tasks.
A screen is placed over the top of barrels to keep out such pests as mosquitoes and the completed barrel can be elevated on two or three cement blocks to allow easy access to the spigot. The higher the barrel, the better the water pressure.
While a small rain barrel or rain water tank is not likely to provide all the water needed to sustain your plants, it can certainly supplement your current watering schedule. Planter beds, vegetable or flower gardens and potted plants can easily be irrigated with the water from a rain barrel.

Most people, in the USA and here in South Africa, after they have installed a small rainwater tank or rain barrel, quickly realise that they could be harvesting far more rainwater than the small tanks can store. We recommend installing sufficiently sized water tanks right from the start- the financial benefits of collecting free water are obvious and the rainwater tanks quickly pay for themselves. Perhaps even more importantly for the homeowner or business is that reserve water is available in the event of a water supply cut, as has been occurring in many towns and cities in Zimbabwe and South Africa recently. Choose a high quality water tank for longevity and water safety; we recommend water tanks and rain water tanks made by JoJo Tanks.
