Zanzibar: Rainwater Harvesting To Alleviate Water Shortages

Zanzibar — IN efforts to reduce the problem of water shortage, Zanzibar is planning to implement a rainwater harvest project, the minister responsible for water, housing and human settlement development, Mr Ramadhani Abdallaah Shaaban has said.

Responding to questions from members of the House including Mr Saleh Nassor Juma (CUF- Wawi) and Mr Ibrahim Makungu (CCM-Bububu), the minister admitted that the islands face water shortages and that his ministry was working with development partners to find a lasting solution.

“We have been taking various measures to overcome the problem of water shortage and keeping the environment clean. Currently, some schools in Muungano, Pete and Mgambo in Unguja island and Kilindi and Kisiwani in Pemba have been earmarked for the rainwater harvesting pilot project,” Shaaban said.

He said the project is being supported by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the UN-HABIBAT and that some areas of Zanzibar including schools will benefit, should the project bear fruit. The legislators wanted to know what the government was doing in resolving the water crisis and why it has not used modern technology in harvesting rainwater.
