Some considerations when positioning water tanks

Whether a water tank or water tanks are purchased for a business or a home, there are some important considerations that should be taken into account when positioning them on the property.

The shape and size of the property as well as the intended use of the water tank or water tanks will play a role in where the tanks are installed.

For instance, if the water tank is to be used for temporary storage of borehole water (or water from other sources) and for providing water pressure, the water tank should be positioned on the high side of the property, i.e. with the building where the water will be directed at a lower elevation.  The potential water pressure can be increased by installing the water tank on a tank stand or by installation a water pressure booster pump or both.  In this case, the water tank’s position will be predetermined, perhaps with some margin for positioning for aesthetic or other reasons.

If water tanks are to be used for rainwater harvesting systems, generally they must be positioned at a lower level than the lowest point of a roof’s gutter.  This means that the water tanks will need to be placed on the down side of a house.  If the rainwater is to be used in the building, a pump will need to be installed so that the rainwater can be directed back into the building, against gravity.  If the rainwater is to be used for garden irrigation and other uses, such as filling swimming pools, a pump may not be required if the use will occur at a lower elevation – the water will naturally flow downwards.

Other factors that need to be taken into account are aesthetics, building regulations, levelled areas on the property, landscaping and space available for water tanks.  Sometimes an underground water tank may be a better solution, especially where space is at a premium and where body corporates do not allow water tanks to be visible.
