An overview of some the types of poly storage tanks available in South Africa

There are many types and sizes of plastic or polyethylene water tanks available; here is an overview of what is available from one of South Africa’s best-known poly tank manufacturers, JoJo Tanks:

Standard vertical tanks: These are probably the most common type of poly tank and probably the type that most are familiar with. Vertical tanks are designed for above-ground installation, either on a base at ground level or on a tank stand. Vertical tanks are available in a wide range of different sizes (260 litres up to 20000 litres) as well as colours. JoJo Tanks manufacture medium duty and heavy duty versions of the standard version which can be used for chemical storage. A variation of the standard vertical tank is the low profile tank which is lower in height but with a wider diameter (JoJo Tanks offer a 5000 litre and a 10000 litre low profile tank).

Horizontal tanks: Also known as transporter tanks, these are primarily used for transporting water and other liquids & chemicals such as fuel (medium duty and heavy duty versions are available too). These tanks are typically long and not very high to keep the centre of gravity closer to the ground – important for transport stability and safety. Horizontal tanks can also be used in a static role where standard vertical tanks may be too high.

Underground tanks: As the name implies these tanks are designed to be buried underground and can withstand the forces generated by the surrounding earth. These tanks are typically cylindrical on a horizontal plane and have reinforcing ribs to strengthen the structure. JoJo Tanks offer a 6000 litre underground water tank which, if installed according to JoJo Tanks’ guidelines, can even be buried under driveways. Underground tanks are useful where space is limited or where above-ground tanks are otherwise unsuitable.

Silo tanks: Otherwise known as conical tanks, are usually used in the agricultural and manufacturing industries. Silo tanks are cone-shaped with the conical end having an opening to allow easy release of the tanks’ contents. Polyethylene silo tanks can be used for storing both solids (such as grain) and liquids (such as molasses). Special silo tank stands are required; JoJo Tanks offers both poly silo tanks and silo tank stands.

Septic tanks & conservancy tanks: These tanks are designed to be buried underground and are used for sewerage and greywater applications. Conservancy tanks are designed to allow regular pumping-out of the contents. Poly septic tanks and conservancy tanks have a number of advantages over traditional concrete versions, including price, lower transport costs and easier installation.

Drums: Poly or plastic drums have a multitude of uses from being used as ‘rain barrels’ to being used for storage of water and various other substances. JoJo Tanks manufacture drums ranging in size from 50 litres to 260 litres.

JoJo Tanks also offer steel tank stands for 5000 litre and 10000 litre water tanks as well as a range of other agricultural and industrial products. Click on the links below to see more.
