The world is running out of water. A daunting fact and one that is predicted to cause an unprecedented global conflict over clean water.
Water issues are real, escalating and will start to affect everyone. With less than 1% of the water on earth drinkable and six times as many people on the planet as we did in the year 1900, the collision between the two is highly probable.
The Dry Run
Jerry Yudelson, a global green building thought leader, and a man who has been hailed as the ‘Godfather of Green’ has written a book entitled “Dry Run: Preventing the Next Urban Water Crisis” and in it Yudelson warns about water conflicts that are likely to increase worldwide as population growth, limited water supplies and growing urbanization collide. In his book, Yudelson not only demonstrates what we can do through personal efforts to conserve water, and how to be a water activist in our towns or cities, but he also talks about how we can change the way we build buildings and cities to incorporate water conservation practices and water efficient designs.
The role of the built environment in the water crisis
Yudelson foresees the development of a new design specialty, the “whole systems water engineer,” who will integrate rainwater harvesting, storm water mitigation, gray water reuse, site irrigation, cooling tower water use, onsite water treatment, sewer mining and other technologies and techniques into a unified approach to “zero net water use”.
In this way, the whole systems water engineer will integrate the work of the architect, landscape architect, civil engineer, mechanical engineer and plumbing engineer in new buildings and major renovations. The reality is that if we are to avert a crisis – everyone has to become a water custodian in order to ensure a sustainable future.
The Godfather of Green
Yudelson advocates for more environmentally respectful urban spaces that minimise the harm on our environment. He is acclaimed for his engaging presentations that have broad appeal among architects, engineers, contractors, developers and others in the green building, green products, green development and real estate marketplace.
Yudelson, who holds an engineering degree, a Masters in water resources engineering, and a masters of business administration, will be presenting up the upcoming annual Green Building Council of South Africa Convention and Exhibition taking place at the CTICC from 23 – 25 October. He will also be presenting two compelling master classes as part of the build-up to the Convention.
Entitled “High Performance Building Design” and “The Business Case for Zero Net Energy Buildings”, these two master classes, taking place at the Pavilion Conference Centre in the Clocktower Precinct at the V&A Waterfront on Monday, 23rd of October from 14h00 – 17h00 will look at some of the detailed design strategies that we can use, as we strive to reach the goal of zero-net-energy buildings by 2030, as well as the business case for high-performing green buildings.
