Water storage tanks are an excellent addition to any home, regardless of the climate involved, but there are a few things that need to be done before you can call a project finished.  In this article we will cover the basics in installing a polyethylene water tank and how you should go about it when you work:

Site preparation

There are a few things that will be determining factors when it comes to the proper location for your rainwater tank. You will first need to walk around your home, noting the locations of your downpipes. Keep in mind that the closer your water tank is to one, the simpler your overall installation will be. Once you have the proper site selected, you will need to focus on preparing it for the tasks ahead. You will also need to ensure you check for regulations regarding rainwater tank installation and what you need to do to keep to them if there are any. You should make sure you handle the polyethylene rain water tank with care when you place it into position. Make sure you avoid any sharp surfaces and edges when you move it.

Place it on a level, solid and compacted base surface which will extend beyond the perimeter of the water tank, making sure it will not be eroded by snow, rain or wind. A good base can be made from a number of materials, such as concrete, brick or gravel/sand as well as even a solid dolomite surface as long as it has enough depth. If you want to use a water tank stand, make sure you use a properly designed one and not something that may be unstable when installed.

You must ensure you have your water tank is installed by a plumber/installer who knows what he’s doing and with accordance to the local regulations. Of course they may vary depending on where you live, so you would need to be aware of what they are beforehand. Start by inserting a length of flexible pipe inside the water tank, which will allow absorbing shocks and movement from the pipe fittings used. Position it directly into the ground itself to avoid running over the pipe when you move as well as damaging it or the water tank. The tank overflow has to be piped away from the tank in order to avoid damaging the tank base. Make sure you don’t have any pipe work without supports, as it will put too much strain on the fittings and the wall.

Gutters and Roofing

The gutters of your roof are the other key component in rainwater harvesting, so you will have to ensure they are always empty of leaves and debris. Damaged gutters will need to be repaired if you want the system to work well, so get them fixed sooner rather than later.
