JoJo Tanks Products – Tips & Information

Here are some tips and information about JoJo water tanks and the various other JoJo Tanks products available in South Africa.

Tank fittings

JoJo vertical water tanks come standard with 40mm connectors at the bottom and 40mm inlet/overflow fittings at the top.

JoJo vertical chemical tanks come standard with 50mm connectors at the bottom.

Water tanks and chemical tanks can also be special-ordered with 75mm fittings at a small extra charge.

Basic rain water tank installation procedure

1. Choose the area where you want to install the water tank
2. Level and compact the ground where the tank will be
3. Measure and lay the shuttering for the concrete slab for the tank base
4. Lay the concrete so that the top of the slab is level
5. Place the water tank on the centre of the slab
6. Extend a pipe from the roof gutter to the lid of the water tank
7. Cut a hole in the water tank’s lid so the gutter pipe fits it snugly
8. Connect the tap at the bottom and the overflow pipe at the top of the tank and you’re done.

Vertical Tanks

JoJo vertical tanks are probably the best known type of polyethylene tank in South Africa.  The range comprises of standard duty (water) tanks (SG 1), medium duty (chemical) tanks (SG 1.4) and heavy duty (chemical) tanks (SG 1.6).  There are also ‘Low Profile’ JoJo tanks available.  Commercial customers can request specially manufactured tanks with even thicker walls (above SG 1.6) to suit specific liquid chemical storage requirements.  The vertical tank capacities range from 260 litres to 20000 litres.  The 5000 litre and 10000 litre tanks being popular for domestic use while JoJo’s impressive 15000 litre and 20000 litre tanks are popular with industries and community centres, clinics, hospitals, etc. where large volumes of stored water are needed.  Click here for the full range of JoJo vertical tanks.

Horizontal Tanks

Horizontal tanks are also known as transporter tanks and can be fitted onto the back of an LDV / bakkie or truck to build a water car or water tanker.  Applications include drinking water, irrigation, fire fighting and disaster preparedness.  The medium and heavy duty horizontal tanks can also be used for transporting fuel and other liquids.  Horizontal tanks can also be used as fixed storage containers where a low tank is required.  JoJo’s horizontal tanks are used in the construction, agricultural, chemical and other industries.  JoJo Tanks’ wide range of horizontal tanks means that there is sure to be a model that will satisfy your requirements.  Horizontal tanks are available in sizes ranging from 240 litre to 5500 litres, the 5000 litre and 5500 litre being the most popular capacities for commercial applications.  For the full range of JoJo horizontal tanks, click here.

Is water stored in a JoJo water tank safe to drink?

JoJo tanks are made from the best quality raw food grade materials (sourced from Sasol) and complies with the US Food & Drug Administration specifications that guarantee your health and safety.

All JoJo water tanks are lined with a black food safety accredited lining that inhibits the growth of algae and ensures the stored water is kept safely stored for longer.  Rain water should be filtered or boiled before drinking to ensure it is free from any micro-organisms or chemicals that the rainwater may have collected on the roof and gutters.

What is the maximum pressure that a JoJo tank can handle?

JoJo tanks are scientifically designed and manufactured to safely withstand the internal pressure created by store water.  However, extrenal pressure (from underground installation) is very high and that is why JoJo’s 6000 litre underground water tank is the only tank that should be installed underground.  JoJo’s underground tanks are ruggedly built with a ribbed design that ensures superior strength and exceptional structural integrity when buried underground.  If a tank made for above-ground usage must be placed under ground then a retaining wall must be built around the tank to ensure the surrounding earth does not squash the tank (particularly when the tank is empty).

Useful tips for inspecting and maintaining your JoJo tank

1. Check inlet, outlet and overflow for leaks (3 monthly)
2. Check that the lid remains firmly clipped in place (3 monthly)
3. On rainwater tanks, check condition of stainless steel mesh sieve (annually)
4. Check that the gutter pipe entering the tank is completely sealed (3 monthly)
5. Check for the presence of mosquito larvae in tank water (3 monthly)
6. Check the sludge level and internal cleanliness (every 2 years or as required).

How to check the level of water in a water tank

There are various DIY methods of checking the water tank level, including using a float attached to a counterweight or clear tube using water pressure but the professional and easy way of knowing the level is to install JoJo’s Tank Alert.

The JoJo Tank Alert allows you to monitor the water tank levels from the comfort of your home or office.  The JoJo Tank Alert kit contains an electronic gauge which will accurately and reliably measure the water level in your water tank and transmit the information to a digital receiver located in your home/office.  Communication distance between the level gauge and the receiver is typically up to 200m (depends on terrain and whether there are other buildings between the tank and the home/office).
