A weekend steel cabin with a couple of twists … this 1,000 square-foot tiny house resides near a river on a flood plain – hence the stilts. In addition, the Delta Shelter is solely a weekend abode, and thus is left unattended for days, or weeks at a time — the solution – the home can secured and closed-up into a tidy steel
box by lowering it’s 10′ x 18′ steel shutters by turning a very ‘Jules Verne’ hand crank (see above).
Designed by Tom Kundig and Olson Kundig Architects, the 20′ by 20′ cabin rises 3 stories with the living room and kitchen occupying the top floor.

The ‘Delta Shelter’ would have even less of an environmental impact if it were made from recycled materials, e.g. steel panels from old cargo steel containers and furnished with eco-friendly systems such as greywater recycling systems and rainwater harvesting systems. The concept of steel shutters is also a great security feature, especially in South Africa where crime prevention barriers and innovations are important facets of any building.
