Five tips for saving water at school

Schools can save water in a number of ways, including plumbing solutions and the promotion of good water use habits and rules.
water saving tips for schools

In addition to cutting down on the amount of water that is used, water-saving mechanisms implemented at schools offer the further benefit of educating young people about using water wisely and the need to protect the environment. And of course, the examples that children see at school often influence behaviour at home. See 5 tips for saving water at schools:

1. Fixing Leaks

Schools can save water by promptly fixing all leaks. Students should be encouraged to notify teachers or school administrators as soon as they detect a problem in a restroom or water fountain. A water audit of your school can find hidden leaks that can waste lots of water and money.

2. Installing water-wise plumbing

Schools can install waterless urinals, dual-flush toilets, and taps that turn off automatically after a set amount of time.

3. Limiting use

Schools can further save water by locking up restrooms at night and over the weekend.

4. Incorporating water-wise landscaping

Use plants that don’t require much water in landscaped areas. In addition, water crystals can be added to soil to enhance water retention by as much as 40 per cent.

5. Cleaning

Hard surfaces should not be hosed except in exceptional circumstances. Where possible use a broom or a mop. A leaf blower is an affordable option for cleaning playground areas.

The future of our water resources is linked to the way our children perceive water conservation.  Water conservation education in schools should be given far more attention, especially in water scarce countries such as South Africa.  Schools usually have long, wide rooftops that are ideal for rainwater harvesting.  Installation of rain water tanks outside school buildings would be another great way for children to visually experience water conservation and the school will save on water bills too.  See the wide range of tanks and tank stands made by JoJo Tanks (South Africa) by clicking on the links below.
