Some reasons to buy a polyethylene water tank

In South Africa there are a number of brands & types of water tanks and liquid storage containers; we recommend high quality polyethylene tanks made by JoJo Tanks, here is why:

Affordability: Polyethylene or ‘plastic’ water tanks are usually less expensive than their fibreglass and steel counterparts (assuming similar quality). It is however, unwise to purchase a cheap plastic tank as these will not last long. Look for a poly water tank that has no seams (moulded using the roto-moulding technique, also known as rotational moulding).

Variety of sizes & types: Polyethylene tanks are available in the widest range of shapes and sizes. Steel and fibreglass tanks are mostly in the form of standard vertical water tanks and the range of capacities is generally limited.

Colour: Plastic water tanks are available in many different colours to blend in with the surroundings and it is also easier to find a plastic tank of the correct colour if building codes are in force. Steel water tanks can be painted of course but this adds to the expense and labour (stainless steel water tanks can be very attractive but they are in a higher price range and are difficult to find).

Transport: Poly water tanks are lightweight and good quality poly tanks can take some abuse (e.g. a blow to the wall of a plastic tank may simply produce a temporary dent but fibreglass tanks may crack and steel tanks may be permanently dented). This makes poly water tanks far easier (and less expensive) to transport compared with water tanks made from other materials.

Installation: Being lightweight and easy to manoeuvre, poly water tanks make for easier installation and require less labour thus installation costs are less too. If the tank needs to be hoisted onto a high water tank stand, the lighter weight of plastic water tanks is definitely appreciated.

Longevity: A good quality polyethylene water tank may outlast standard galvanised water tanks in certain conditions. If the mineral load the stored water is high, steel water tanks can corrode at the seams and welds (even ‘stainless’ steel can corrode under certain conditions). Polyethylene water tanks are impervious to most chemicals and do not rust. Be sure to choose a plastic tank also as built-in UV protection (for our harsh African climate).

So we have seen that poly water tanks have many advantages but it should be reiterated that only high quality, rotational-moulded (seamless) plastic water tanks should be considered.
