Video: DIY greywater treatment system

This greywater system makes use of hidden water tanks and effectively treats the grey water as well as makes for an attractive garden feature. Remember that gray water should never be stored in tanks longer than 24 hours before treatment (potentially dangerous bacteria could begin to multiply – not dangerous at low concentrations but possibly harmful at higher concentrations).

The system receives greywater from the shower and washing machine, passes it rapidly through a small (220 litre) two-stage filter comprising charcoal, gravel, and root-matting plants, into a large (4500 litre) constantly-recirculating stream where the water is naturally aerated and UV-treated, and most dissolved salts and nutrients are taken up by vigorously-growing water plants. After more than 2 years’ operation, the water quality is very high: total dissolved solids are below 360ppm and pH is always in the range 7.24 – 7.80.

Greywater irrigation systems can also be designed so that the gray water is immediately pumped from the water tank or drum via a submersible pump (with float switch). This means the grey water is distributed on the lawn or garden as greywater enters the temporary storage water tank (or water tanks in larger systems).
