How important is the colour of your plastic water tank?

Polyethylene or ‘plastic’ water tanks are usually available in a number of different colours. The colour is usually aesthetic but there are some other good reasons to consider the colour before purchasing your poly tank.

Some considerations where colour may be important:

Building codes: If the house or business is located within an estate or business park where building codes are enforced, the colour of your plastic water tank can be very important. To ensure that the wrong colour tank is not purchased, provide the management with a visual printout of the various colours that your chosen tank is available in.

Property value: Although on aesthetic, having a bright red water tank on an otherwise neutrally coloured property, could potentially affect the perceived market value. A poly tank that blends in with the surrounding buildings will increase the property value, especially if connected to a rainwater harvesting system.

Water temperature: Dark coloured tanks, with black being at the extreme side of the spectrum, will always heat up more rapidly and to higher temperatures than lighter coloured tanks, with white being at the other side of the colour spectrum. This could be advantageous or disadvantageous, depending on the circumstances. A point to bear in mind is that higher water temperature is conducive to algae growth. However, light transmission is another important factor in allowing alage to flourish – dark tanks let in much less light than white tanks. A good compromise can probably be had by choosing a mid-spectrum colour such as green (if algae growth is a an issue).

Visual pollution: In pristine areas such as national parks and game reserves, the visual characteristics of buildings are very important. Water tanks are often placed high up on water tank stands, making them potentially an unpleasant eyesore (neighbouring property owners could complain of visual pollution). The answer is to choose a tank colour that blends in with the natural vegetation in the area – the dull greens, olives, khaki and brown are usually best.

Camouflage: In some cases, such as military installations, camouflage may be an important aspect of the buildings – the commonly seen bright green plastic water tanks are very noticeable. A more neutral colour would be called for.

Industrial processing plants: Where there are numerous water tanks and/or chemical tanks, it may be an important safety precaution to standardise on specific colours according to contents of the tanks.
