Water tanks for emergency preparedness

In a world of ever-increasing natural and man-made catastrophes as well as conflict, it is a good idea, at the very least, to ensure that you and your family have probably the most important resource in reserve – water.  A water tank or a few rain barrels installed on the property could be the difference between inconvenience/discomfort and not being affected by water supply outages.

While some may find people who are always prepared for emergencies (also called ‘preppers’) slightly eccentric, preppers who ensure they sufficient water stored in water tanks or other containers will not be affected by even the most inane water supply cut.

Water tanks can be used to store rainwater, municipal water, borehole water or water from other sources for times of water shortages.  If the water is pumped up to a water tank on a high tank stand and stored there, there will even be enough water pressure to supply baths/showers and appliances  during a combined water- and electricity outage…a very real possibility during a natural disaster or act of war.

In some situations around the world, it may be prudent to install underground water tanks; during times of water outages, the value of water increases dramatically – a store of water hidden from view may prevent unwanted attention, especially during civil unrest.

Of course, water tanks will have all their other benefits when not being used during an emergency situation, especially if rainwater is harvested – free water!  Rain water tanks increase the value of the property and have environmental benefits too (e.g. reduction in storm water runoff).
