Trees are one of nature’s greatest assets. And the reasons to plant one are many. Trees removes contaminants from our air, land and water. A tree can also lower your utility bills and increase the ‘curb appeal’ of your home. Do Your Part this Earth month and plant a tree.
We all know that trees produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. Just one acre of forest can remove nearly 3 tons of carbon dioxide from the environment every year. The leaves also work to collect dust and other microscopic matter from the air, reducing levels of particulate matter that can damage our lungs and lead to respiratory disease.
Trees remove toxic heavy metals and other pollutants from the soil, keeping those dangerous elements from entering aquifers deep underground. Trees help keep our waterways by stabilizing the nearby soil and slowing storm water runoff. This prevents excessive sediment from eroding and washing into the water where it can choke the life from the surrounding aquatic ecosystem.
In warm climates, a deciduous tree planted near the south or southwest corner of your home will provide cooling shade during the hotter months. Tree leaves also help cool the surrounding environment by releasing water vapor through a process called transpiration. During autumn, the leaves will fall from the tree allowing the winter sun to shine through. In cold climates, a row of evergreen trees placed on the northern side of your home can serve as a windbreaker to the arctic wind and snow.
Think about it. A house with trees in the yard always looks more inviting that a home without trees. Established trees can increase the value of your home by adding ‘curb appeal’ because it makes the home look ‘cared for’. There is also some evidence to suggest that homes with established trees are less likely to be burglarized.
From furniture to cosmetics and food to fuel, trees provide us with thousands of products. When forests are managed with the environment in mind, they are truly one of nature’s greatest assets.
