Here I will just give three important reasons to go green that cover a range of motivations: one is environmental, the second is geo-political/patriotic, and the third is very practical.
1) Going green is the right thing to do. I think we should conserve energy resources that we know are finite (oil supplies, etc) and work to create a world in which energy supply comes from renewable sources as much as possible. The best situation will be when those renewable supplies of energy are roughly in balance with energy demand. At that point, we no longer need to extract and burn fossil fuels because we will be entirely reliant on renewable sources.
2) Going green will make the country more energy independent, and reduce the need to import energy, especially fossil fuels, from abroad. It is especially important to reduce importation from the Middle East where a cartel operates that is not particularly friendly toward us and will always conspire to drive up prices on us.
3) Going green saves money when done the right way, making your budget go a lot farther. Everyone has to pay for energy and clean water. Saving energy and water will save you money, and that money saved is not trivial. Saving $1000 per year is a reasonable target for most families. I can’t speak for everyone else, but $1000 every year represents an important addition to my disposable income.
There you have it: three reasons to go green.
