Rain water tanks for commercial buildings

Big commercial buildings such as shopping centres, factories and warehouses usually have ideal roof surfaces for rainwater harvesting. The surface areas of commercial rooftops are usually huge which means that vast quantities of rainwater can be harvested. The number and size of water tanks should be appropriate.

Here is a simple online calculator to help get an idea of how much rainwater can be harvested:

Commercial buildings are usually in areas where space is not too limited and thus the rainwater harvesting potential should be maximised by installing the biggest water tanks available. This could entail a series of 10000 litre tanks placed along the building’s wall. Depending on the shape of the property and space available, it may be better to install fewer larger tanks such as the massive 15000 litre or 20000 litre JoJo polyethylene water tank.

Other factors such as building codes and municipal regulations should also be taken into account. Fortunately, poly or plastic water tanks can be bought in a variety of colours, making it easier to match any colour requirements. In some cases, building codes may not allow above-ground tanks, in which case, underground water tanks may be installed. In South Africa, JoJo Tanks’ biggest underground water tank of 6000 litres can be installed in series underground. These underground tanks are very robust and can even be installed under driveways and parking areas.

If the rainwater is to be used for irrigation, then very little, if any, filtration is required. If the rainwater is to be used for industrial processes such as cooling or as part of a manufacturing process, some filtration may be necessary. Rainwater that is to be used for drinking must be properly filtered/purified (to remove any contaminants that it may have picked up from the roof or gutters).

As large water tanks are a sizeable financial investment for any business, it would be wise to choose a well-known brand that can offer a warranty or guaranty. JoJo Tanks offer an 8-year warranty on all their tanks and high quality is assured.
