Cost: This is often the first and most important factor influencing consumers’ choices when it comes to polyethylene water tanks. It is usually wise to rule out the very cheapest tanks, the ‘hard to believe’ priced tanks. These poly tanks will almost certainly be of inferior quality and will have a very short service life, assuming they make it in one piece during transport. At the other end of the spectrum, the extremely expensive tanks are most probably of good quality but beware of paying inflated prices if it is imported. Narrow your choice down to the moderately-priced poly tanks and ask further questions, some outlined below.
Local backup & guarantees: It is all very well choosing a good quality imported plastic water tank but is there local customer service back-up and are there any guarantees or warranties offered? Even if there are, imported brands may not be around in the future when you need advice or have a warranty claim. Locally-made poly water tanks, especially those that have a long established history in the country, will be the brands to choose from.
Availability: Some brands are only available from certain retailers in certain regions. While this may not necessarily be a disadvantage, the brands that are available nation-wide are likely to have the best service network and customer service.
Materials used in manufacture: Not all polyethylene is the same quality and there are many different types of related polymers. Some brands may not disclose the source of their raw material or will have very little information available to the consumer. Avoid these brands as the quality of the raw material may be suspect and may not even be fit for storing potable water. Brands that disclose the source of the raw material as well as all the specifications, can be trusted – the quality of the water tank is assured.
Type of moulding process: There are two main ways that polyethylene tanks are made: 1) the traditional split mould process where two or more moulds are used to make parts of the tank which are then fused together and 2) rotational moulding whereby a special spinning process is used to make a tank in one piece where there are no seams or joints. The rotational-moulded tanks (known in the industry as roto-moulded tanks) will always be inherently less prone to splits and cracks than tank that have seams (weak points).
