Water tank stands can be made from timber, brick or steel; we recommend steel water tank stands designed by certified structural engineers. So why would you need a water tank stand?
Water tank stands have a primary purpose – that is to elevate a water storage tank to facilitate pressure from the effect of gravity. The higher the water tank stand the more pressure that can be gained. Water pressure can be measured in three common units: bar, psi and head (in metres); 1 bar = 10 metres head = 14.5 psi. In most cases, if the building does not have Mains water supply, the pressure generated from an elevated tank stand will also be boosted or assisted by a booster pressure pump. Most household appliances operate well at a minimum pressure of 1 bar. Water tank stands thus can reduce the size (and cost) of booster pumps.
A secondary purpose for water tank stands is for a stable, flat platform for a water tank or chemical tank to be installed on. Water tanks should always be placed on a level, firm base to ensure that the pressure from a full tank is distributed evenly – a 10000 litre water tank exerts 10 metric tonnes of downward pressure! Uneven platforms or bases could cause the bottom of a water tank to sag resulting in cracks or rupture. This is another reason why we recommend water tank stands that have been designed and manufactured under the auspices of a qualified structural engineer.
Another purpose for water tank stands is to elevate water tanks (or chemical/fuel tanks) out of reach – either for making it more difficult for vandals to tamper with the tank and its contents or to keep the tank out of reach from animals.
