South Africa’s water strategy: Have your say

The Water Affairs Department says R668-billion is needed to finance water strategies countrywide over the next 10 years.

It says although it has managed to raise some funds from stakeholders, there is currently a shortfall of just over R300-billion.

The Department’s Marie Brisley has been speaking at a National Water Resource Strategy workshop at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Brisley and other department officials are in KZN to promote public participation in the second draft of the strategy.

She says the initial strategy – which was adopted by government in 2004 – has led to great strides in delivering water across South Africa.

She says however there are areas of concern which still must be addressed.

“Some of those issues are social and equity challenges, the need for water security for growth and development, inadequate sustainable services – these refer to the functionality of some of the schemes – water resource pollution, disaster management and also the challenges related to climate change, and also the degradation of habitat and eco-systems,” she said.

The draft is open for public comment until the 7th of December 2012.
