In a world that is becoming ever more water scarce, innovations such as this alternative to water tanks and rainwater tanks are sorely needed.
Rainwater harvesting just took on new possibilities, thanks to one Randy Young, from Tucson Arizona.
He and his team have developed a wall (Wall 2.0) that functions as a rainwater harvesting tank.
They’re interested in the water, of course: Tucson is a water-stressed area. But his real passion is temperature control. Where he lives, it’s very hot. And water has great thermal protection: the hollow concrete wall, when filled with water, keeps homes cool in summer (and, of course, warm in winter).
For people of a technical bent, here’s the thinking: a substance called Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM) is added to the liquid concrete. During the curing process, KIM builds crystals in the pores of the concrete, making it water-proof.
Walls 2.0 is ingenious. It combines function and form, rainwater harvesting and thermal protection, in ways that are good for us, and good for the planet. At the moment, the Walls 2.0 team is raising money on the crowdsourcing platform Kickstarter – they need to raise $60 000 in order to take their prototype to the next level, and I for one am really hoping their community comes through for them. It’s an awesome idea. And our water-stressed world needs it. Watch the video here.
