Four main reasons for installing an underground water tank

Underground water tanks are sometimes a better option that the normal above-ground vertical water tanks.

Here are 4 main reasons to install underground water tanks:

1. Where space is limited: In some cases there is simply no space for the placement of above-ground water tanks. High property values mean that every square inch of property is important – above-ground water tanks can take up valuable building space unnecessarily when underground tanks are a feasible alternative.
2. Aesthetics & building codes: Some may find above-ground water tanks to be not very pleasing to the eye, especially where certain modern architecture is present. Some body corporate either do not allow above-ground water tanks or insist that they be completely hidden; an underground water tank obviously solves this.
3. Safety & security: In certain areas, above-ground water tanks may be prone to vandalism and possibly even vulnerable to criminals poisoning or contaminating the stored water. Underground water tanks can be completely hidden from view and made virtually inaccessible to vandals and criminals.
4. Extreme temperatures & environmental other factors: In freezing or extremely hot conditions, water stored in above-ground water tanks can be adversely affected temperature-wise, with freezing obviously being potentially more inconvenient and possibly causing damage to the water tank itself. Underground water tanks are naturally insulated from extreme temperatures. Underground water tanks are also protected from extreme weather conditions such as high winds and heavy hail storms.

When choosing an underground water tank, ensure that is properly designed and manufactured by a well-known brand name – poorly designed underground tanks can collapse when buried, especially if the tank becomes empty.

In South Africa, we recommend the 6000 litre underground water tank made by JoJo Tanks which is extremely robust and can even be installed under driveways if properly installed.
