Why all schools in South Africa should have water tanks

South Africa is a water scarce country and measures to ensure water is available for our school learners should be a priority. Water tanks installed on the school premises are a practical solution, especially for schools without municipal water connection.

School buildings, with their inherently long and wide rooftops, are ideal for collecting rainwater, provided there is at least one gutter for channelling the rainwater to a downspout that leads to rainwater tank. The rainwater can be used for irrigating school sports fields, vegetable gardens, toilets and can also be used for drinking if appropriately filtered.

Municipality-supplied or private water bowsers can provide ‘off-grid’ schools with clean drinking water if there are sufficient water tanks installed on the property. Many rural schools have no municipal water connections and thus would need to rely on periodic re-filling of their water tanks (if they are not harvesting rainwater). While not ideal, this could mean the difference between having clean, potable water or no water at all.
