Installing water tanks underground

Water tanks can be installed underground or below ground level; there are two approaches: use purpose-built underground tanks or build a chamber with retaining walls for conventional above-ground water tanks.

Underground tanks, such as the JoJo 6000 litre underground water tank, are designed to withstand external pressure from the surrounding earth when completely buried.  Properly installed, high quality underground tanks, such as those made by JoJo Tanks, can even withstand vehicle traffic and can be buried beneath driveways and parking areas.  See more details of the installation procedure for underground tanks here.

Another approach to placing water tanks underground is to use normal above-ground water tanks but to first build retaining walls to keep the surround earth away from the water tanks.  Normal water tanks, such as JoJo vertical water tanks, are not made to withstand external pressure on the walls and so must never be buried with earth pushing directly onto the walls (it may seem fine when the water tanks are full but when they are empty, the walls will probably cave in and/or distort).  Placing conventional above-ground water tanks in underground chambers (with bricked retaining walls) has advantages: the water tanks can be readily inspected and ancillary fittings, pumps, etc can be more easily installed and replaced if necessary.
