Earth Hour 2013, 8:30 PM Saturday 23 March. Earth Hour has grown from a one-city initiative in 2007 to the world’s largest campaign for the planet, uniting hundreds of millions of people across 7001 cities and towns in 152 countries and territories.
How did Earth Hour come about?
The Earth Hour event we see today has been 9 years in the making.
In 2007, one city decided to take a stand against climate change. 2,2 million people across Sydney switched off their lights for an event that would become known across the world as Earth Hour.
2008 saw Earth Hour being held in 371 cities and towns in more than 35 countries globally. A highly conservative estimate concludes that 50 million people participate.
In 2009, the symbol of switching off the lights, united the planet – over 4 000 cities across 88 countries took part.
A record 128 countries and territories joined the global display of climate action in 2010. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the Americas switched off.
135 countires took part in Earth Hour 2011. This was the first Earth Hour to go beyond the hour, as supporters were asked to think about what else they could do to make a difference.
In 2012, Earth Hour broke another record, cementing itself as the largest voluntary action for the environment, with more than 6 950 cities and towns across 152 countries and territories taking part.
Don’t forget to save the date for Earth Hour 2013 and see the world unite to protect the planet.
