Why schools should install rain water tanks

Rain water tanks can store great quantities of rainwater for garden and other uses but when there is no rain, one source of water that is always available – grey water – use it for garden irrigation.
Bedding displays, pots and hanging baskets use a lot of water. If your rainwater tanks are empty, consider grey water instead.
“Grey water” is the domestic waste water from baths, showers, washing machines and the kitchen sink. A washing machine can use more than 50 litres – five watering cans.
Grey water varies in quality: dishwasher waste is too polluted for the garden, while water used for preparing vegetables is ideal. Detergents from sinks, baths and showers can be filtered by most soils and compost, although avoid bleaching agents.
Most plants (not edibles) will tolerate grey water for a few weeks in summer. Prolonged use might cause problems, however, so committed recyclers could try using fewer soaps and salts.
You can reuse grey water with a washing-up bowl or fill watering cans from the bath. Simple diversion kits will channel grey water from a downpipe into the garden. Use the water as soon as it is produced.
More elaborate grey water systems to redirect, filter and store domestic waste water are available. Have it installed by an expert to prevent any flow-back into the mains water system.
