There are many reasons to harvest rainwater and install water tanks, including saving money on your water bills. Here’s why rainwater tanks are also good for the environment.
Rainwater harvesting tanks on a property positively affects the environment in the following ways:
- By harvesting rainwater and storing it in rainwater tanks, a household or business eases the pressure on municipalities to supply scarce water, especially in South Africa. Ground water reserves are also being over-utilised in many areas. If we can abstract less water from our lake, rivers, dams and ground water, we will be helping the environment.
- In urban areas, run-off into storm-water drains can cause serious damage to local aquatic ecosystems. The hard surfaces in urban areas do not allow for much infiltration; the result is that this water is directed to local streams, rivers and waterways causing significant stream-bank erosion. The rainwater also collects oil, chemicals and litter from roads, industrial areas and yards – this also always ends up in local aquatic ecosystems causing extensive damage to micro-organisms and aquatic fauna and flora. Rainwater harvesting tanks therefore reduce the amount of rainwater rushing over yards and roads and it therefore beneficial to the environment.
- Water and energy are inextricably linked – to produce and distribute water to towns and cities, it takes an enormous amount of electricity (and electricity generation usually uses great amounts of water too). Harvesting rainwater requires no electricity. Reticulating it around a house may require a pump (depending on the circumstances) but these pumps are relatively efficient and do not uses much electricity at all. Harvesting rainwater and storing it in water tanks therefore reduces energy use overall so that is always good for the environment.
There are so many good reasons to install rainwater tanks but if the ‘conventional’ reasons (mainly saving money and being more water self-sufficient) fail to impress, think of how you would be helping the environment and reducing your carbon footprint.
