Aveng had formed a new company, called Aveng Water, said CEO Roger Jardine on Monday as he announced the company’s results for the six months ended December 31, in Johannesburg.
The new company would house all of the JSE-listed entity’s aspirations for the water market, he noted, especially in the acid main drainage and desalination industries.
The initial target market was the mining sector, said Jardine, however, there was also room to bring the municipal sector on board.
Aveng was looking to double the amount of water it treated within the next few years.
Jardine said it was Aveng’s intention to “substantially increase” its water offerings to the market, mainly through the use of the HiPRO technology developed at its Keyplan subsidiary.
Keyplan is able to treat acid mine drainage, while it also officially launched the 55 000-m³/d Trekkopje seawater desalination plant, near Swakopmund, in Namibia, in April last year.
The plant, which Keyplan designed and built, converts seawater from the Atlantic Ocean into potable water for use at Areva Resources Namibia’s Trekkopje opencast uranium mine.

The scope for water treatment and water purification companies in South Africa is huge, especially as government and parastatals are struggling with inefficiencies, failing infrastructure and corruption. The value of water as a resource will climb drastically in the near future; it will be traded as a valued commodity, not only nationally but between nations too. Rooftop rainwater harvesting is a way for households to have some control over their water supply and have your own water storage facilities, in the form of water tanks, ensures continuity of water supply as South African municipal water supply cuts become more frequent and longer in duration.
Water Rhapsody Water Conservation Systems Mpumalanga offers water tank and rainwater tank installation, rainwater harvesting systems (see rainwater FAQ), grey water recycling (see greywater FAQ) and water-saving devices for swimming pools and toilet flush systems (see product demo ). Our WWF Award-winning water systems can be retrofitted or built into new buildings and can be adapted to small households or large business blocks, hospitals, schools, lodges & hotels.
Water Rhapsody has incorporated Yes Solar– official distributor of German-made Solsquare solar water heating systems that are installed by Eskom-accredited solar installers (our solar geysers are eligible for Eskom solar energy rebates).
