Oman: Protection of potable water resources stressed

MUSCAT — A three-day workshop on ‘Regions for the Protection of Water Supplies Well Fields’, organized by the Environment and Climate Affairs Ministry, in association with government institutions, began yesterday under the auspices of Dr Abdulmunim bin Mansour bin Said al Hasani, Minister of Information, in the presence of Mohammed bin Salim al Toobi, Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs.

In a statement, the Information Minister said the organization of this seminar at this particular time is very important as the world is witnessing huge drain of potable water. He affirmed that the seminar, at which representatives of government units and experts taking part, will come out with a solution for the protection of water resources which are real wealth for us and the future generations.

He stressed the media role in raising public awareness of the importance of protecting potable water resources in light of the high population growth and the increasing demand of human for potable water. He stressed the importance of co-operation between society and the Environment and Climate Affairs Ministry in preserving this wealth and limiting water pollution.

On his part Mohammed bin Abdullah al Mahrami, Director-General of Environmental Affairs at the Environment and Climate Affairs Ministry, said the rapid development in the different economic, industrial and social spheres and expansion of agricultural activities witnessed by the Sultanate during the last decade has put pressures on natural resources and underground water in particular.

He added that the Sultanate has made impressive development in the field of water security and water resources management and development the most notable of which are the promulgation of laws and legislations for water resources management and protection including the Environment Protection and Pollution Control Law, the Potable Water Resources Protection against Pollution Law.

He affirmed that the implementation of protection of water supplies well project require great technical skills and specialized studies, at which the Sultanate has been a leader. He added that the many challenges include poor water condition in some regions and having some industrial areas at the borders of the protection regions for the water supplies wells.

The seminar which include six sessions aims to come up with clear recommendations and outcomes on the methodology to be followed in preparing the protection regions for the water supplies wells and revising the work plans.
