Tips for choosing the right water tank

Choosing a water tank or water tanks can be daunting and as good quality tanks are not cheap, the decision should be well considered before purchasing.

Here are some tips to help you choose the right water tank:

Plastic, steel or fibreglass tanks? There are pros and cons for all these types of water tanks but we feel that ‘plastic’ or polyethylene water tanks should, in most cases, be chosen. Poly tanks are lightweight making them easy to transport & install, are available in a huge array of types and capacities and are relatively inexpensive.

What size tank to buy? This can depend on a number of factors, including what the tank or tanks will be used for. If for rainwater harvesting, the potential amount of rainwater that can be harvested will depend on the roof surface area. Also, is a professional rainwater harvesting system that integrates with existing water supply to be installed or is it more ‘hobby’ rainwater collecting? For those who would like to collect a little extra rainwater for pot plants and sundry garden & yard uses, a smaller rain barrel or something like a 750 litre Slimline tank should suffice. For those that intend going ‘off-grid’ then storage capacity of 10000 litres or more may be required. Big office buildings and warehouses may require a series of 15000 litre or 20000 litre tanks to effectively store all the harvested rainwater. For a household that needs a back-up supply of municipal water (especially in areas where water supply outages are common) a 2500 litre or 5000 litre water tank should suffice.

What colour water tank? Apart from personal preferences, there may be building codes in force which restrict the colour of structures and buildings. Poly tanks are available in a wide variety of colours, usually at no extra cost, so it makes sense to choose a colour that blends in with the building and the surrounding environment.

Where to buy? Local hardware and building stores usually have a fair range of the more popular water tanks on offer. Before buying check delivery policies (if you cannot transport the tank yourself) and look for establishments that offer a good price and preferably free delivery. Remember, you may find a water tank at a ‘bargain price’ at a retailer but then delivery charges may be exorbitant.
