Whether it’s bread, meat, milk or fruit, whatever we eat demands water.  The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimates that we need to increase agricultural production globally by 70% to feed the projected 9 billion people expected on the planet by 2050.

But, given the current global food crisis, boosting it will certainly increase water stress.  Rainwater harvesting is seen as “non-technological”, unpredictable and vulnerable to climate hazards.  Yet, agriculture depends on rainfall: on average it accounts for 85% of agricultural water usage. So harvesting rainfall is key to boosting crop yields.

Good water management in agriculture should, therefore, not only be about investing in hi-tech drip or pumping systems; it should also consider efficient rainwater harvesting, management, conservation and resourceful use to reduce water stress and increase production.
