The World Wide Fund for Nature on Monday urged mining companies not to choose areas that are environmentally sensitive for prospecting.
The WWF has also called on banks not to fund mining companies that target resources in such areas.
Spokesperson Mark Botha said this includes key water catchment areas.
He explained the long-term effects of mining in water catchment areas include the erosion of water security countrywide.
“There are many areas in the country that are much better served by being protected in the long term. They provide critical ecosystem services. They harbour the most phenomenal natural heritage,” he said.
